Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that the U.S. did not approve Israel’s attack on the South Pars site and accused Israel of reacting violently, casting doubt on U.S. influence over its ally.
“My hope is that the United States will be able to understand that this has gone too far,” Guterres expressed.
According to Guterres, the conflict predominantly benefits Russia, as Moscow welcomes the shift of attention away from Ukraine.
“Russia is the biggest beneficiary of the Iran crisis,” Guterres commented. “Russia is gaining the most from this catastrophe. Russia is already the winner.”
In response to Trump’s request for assistance in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, European leaders such as U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have declined to send ships to the Persian Gulf. France has stated it will only provide support vessels “when the situation is calmer.”
Guterres praised the Europeans for their restraint despite Trump’s frustration over their refusal to support the conflict or assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway that Iran has significantly blocked, leading to increased global energy prices.
“I think these countries made their own reading of the situation, and I believe they took a decision not to get too much involved, knowing that the most important objective is the de-escalation,” he noted.
