The 53-year-old pediatrician became a prominent leader in a series of protests against the nation’s political leadership after a crash and alleged governmental cover-up. However, she distanced herself from many supporters with statements close to right-wing populism concerning abortion rights and relations with Turkey.
“Her stances are reminiscent of [Italy’s] 5Star Movement, but with a more pronounced patriotic and nationalist tone, emphasizing corruption,” Seriatos commented.
“Initially, there was moral credibility and many seemed open to her political message, but she’s now on a downward path,” he continued. Detractors also claim she’s aligned with individuals who have pro-Russian sympathies or connections to Moscow.
Another right-leaning party is anticipated from former PM and New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras.
He was expelled from the party in 2024 after opposing government policies, including those on Turkish relations and what he termed “woke” initiatives like same-sex marriage recognition.
The 75-year-old former leader may have limited electoral influence, but his party might challenge Mitsotakis, whose polls indicate difficulty in winning enough votes for governance.
“The new parties span the political spectrum from left to right, extending beyond traditional political lines, likely shifting the political landscape,” said George Arapoglou, director of pollster Pulse RC.
