UnitedHealthcare had planned to host an investor day event in New York on Wednesday but has canceled the gathering. The company has not yet responded to any requests for comment regarding the situation.
UnitedHealthcare operates as part of UnitedHealth Group, a major health care conglomerate led by CEO Andrew Witty. Witty decided to call off the investor day following reports of a fatal shooting.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004, where he held several executive roles before taking on the position of CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. Under his leadership, UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest health insurance providers in the nation, continued its operations. Thompson resided in Minnesota, which also serves as UnitedHealth Group’s headquarters.
“This is horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota,” said Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
