UN Lawyer Arielle Silverstein Faces Scrutiny for Anti-Religious Online Posts

A senior lawyer within the UN system, Arielle Silverstein, is under scrutiny after archived online posts surfaced in which she mocked various religious communities and advocated political pressure against a minority faith. Silverstein, who has held roles in legal and administrative capacities within the UN, is expected to adhere to the organization’s Staff Regulations, which include upholding the principles of the UN Charter and exhibiting respect for all cultures without discrimination.

However, a compilation of posts attributed to Silverstein, often under aliases like “Bozuri,” is criticized for containing language that challenges these obligations. The posts target Muslims, Jews, Christians, and Scientologists and propose actions against religious groups that raise human-rights concerns.

The posts from the early 2010s express hostility toward religious belief, ridiculing practices and figures of major faiths. Silverstein reportedly called Christians “suckers” and described religious preaching dismissively, labeling “Hispanic preachers” as “wackos.” She mocked Islam and its central figures, referring to the Prophet Muhammad as an “illiterate desert dweller” and commented on Muslims being “particularly thin-skinned.” She also publicly supported “Draw Mohammed Day.”

Despite identifying as a Jewish atheist, Silverstein expressed hostility toward Jews and stated she wanted the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human-rights organization, to cease existing. She boasts familiarity with the Old Testament and enjoys explaining her dislike for God to religious people, showing contempt for believers and disrespect toward Jews who hold the Hebrew Bible sacred.

The posts reflect sweeping hostility toward organized religion across various traditions.

Regarding Scientology, Silverstein encouraged political and governmental pressure against the group, suggesting contacting Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders. She proposed linking Scientology to “radical Muslims” to gain his political interest. Silverstein wrote about using Pakistan’s religious intolerance against Scientology, raising concerns given Pakistan’s criticized blasphemy laws.

The UN has positioned itself as a defender of religious freedom and cultural respect, reflected in its Staff Regulations. Critics find Silverstein’s posts difficult to reconcile with these obligations, given her role within the organization.

The issue raises questions about the balance between employees’ private speech rights and the ethical standards for public officials tasked with defending human rights. The UN has not clarified if it has reviewed the matter, as internal investigations are confidential.

The resurfacing posts have sparked debate about accountability within international institutions and whether global organizations consistently apply the values they promote, such as respect for religious diversity and opposition to discrimination. This case may test how seriously these principles are enforced within the UN.

Just what we need, a UN lawyer who’s an internet troll on the side! Perfect candidate for the job – because who wouldn’t want a little snark in their diplomatic relations? 🤦‍♂️🧐

  2. Seems like Arielle’s a real gem, eh? Nothing like having a UN lawyer who thinks being anti-religion is a fab way to promote peace and harmony. 😏

Seems like Arielle’s got a unique way of “upholding” the UN’s principles, eh? Maybe her next career move should be as a stand-up comic—plenty of material there! 😂

Seems like Arielle’s online hobby was collecting enemies instead of accolades; who knew UN lawyers moonlighted as stand-up comedians? 😂 Good luck convincing anyone that cultural respect is still on the agenda after this!

Seems like Arielle’s taking the whole “respect for all cultures” thing as more of a suggestion than a rule, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Just what we need in the UN—another expert on how to be an absolute wally! 🥴

Looks like someone forgot the memo on “UN stands for Unity, Not Uproar.” 🤦‍♂️ Perhaps she thought the job was to be a stand-up comedian instead of a lawyer. Classic! 😏

Seems like Arielle’s version of diplomacy involves a bit too much sarcasm and not enough, you know, diplomacy. 🤦‍♂️ Maybe she thinks “freedom of speech” means no one gets offended—classic!

Isn’t it just delightful when a UN lawyer decides to moonlight as a stand-up comedian? 🤦‍♂️ Perhaps her next gig should be at the local pub, where the audience might appreciate her “unique” take on religious tolerance! 🍻

  10. Lovely to see our esteemed UN lawyer taking the ‘mockery of faith’ course at the prestigious School of Tolerance. Who knew a degree in sarcasm came with such a hefty salary? 😂

Looks like Arielle’s idea of diplomacy is more about throwing shade than upholding the UN’s ideals. Who needs harmony when you can just roast everyone, eh? 😂

Oh, brilliant! A UN lawyer who thinks mocking religions is a hobby – I guess that’s one way to promote “cultural respect,” isn’t it? 🙄🎭

  13. Oh, look at that, our UN lawyer’s got a flair for comedy – who knew mocking faiths was part of the job description? 😂 Guess we’ll just have to add “Anti-Religious Satire Specialist” to her resume, right?

Isn’t it delightful when a UN lawyer decides to moonlight as a stand-up comedian? 😂 I mean, who needs diplomacy when you’ve got such a knack for offending every religious group under the sun, right? 🙄

  15. Oh sure, a UN lawyer with a flair for mockery and a side gig as a religious commentator—just what we need in international diplomacy! 😂 Let’s hope her next post doesn’t require a diplomatic intervention!

Seems like Arielle’s on a crusade—just not the holy kind, eh? Maybe she thinks mockery makes for great diplomacy; good luck with that in the next UN meeting, love! 😏

Looks like Arielle’s got a real knack for making friends in high places! 😂 I mean, who knew being a UN lawyer also meant moonlighting as a stand-up comic with a penchant for religious roast battles?

Seems like UN lawyer Arielle Silverstein took a masterclass in “How to Win Friends and Influence People” – or maybe just “How to Get a One-Way Ticket Out of the UN” 😂. Must be thrilling to see who can throw more shade at religious communities; perhaps she’s auditioning for a role in the next big political comedy! 🙃
