UN Chief Initiates Significant Humanitarian Appeal from War-Ravaged Lebanon

During a visit to Lebanon’s war-torn capital, the UN chief announced a $308.3 million humanitarian appeal to aid civilians after Israeli strikes against Hezbollah rocket launches displaced around 816,000 Lebanese, a number that is expected to grow.

“I am here on a visit of solidarity with the people of Lebanon,” he said. “Solidarity in words must be matched by solidarity in action. This aid is urgently needed. The military escalation across the region is taking a terrible toll, including in Lebanon.”

The ongoing Middle East crisis has resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths, including many children, and the uprooting of entire communities as “lives have been turned upside down.”

Access to essentials like food, water, healthcare, education, and basic services is critically disrupted, with evacuation orders spanning more of the country. Additionally, over 90,000 people, primarily Syrians and some Lebanese, have crossed into Syria.

Ceasefire needed now

The appeal’s success hinges on rapid, flexible funding and ensuring humanitarian workers can safely reach those in need, the Secretary-General stressed.

“These are immediate needs, but there will be a lot that Lebanon needs in solidarity from the international community,” he said.

“Helping to establish an immediate ceasefire that both sides must accept, creating conditions for negotiations that will allow Lebanon to become a nation with fully respected territorial integrity and where the State controls the use of force,” he said, adding that the UN is ready to assist the government.

Solidarity on the ground

Mr. Guterres noted that Lebanon has long welcomed those fleeing conflict, exemplifying true hospitality, solidarity, and resilience.

“Now, the world must show the people of Lebanon our strongest support in this hour of grave danger and profound need,” the UN chief said.

“In the face of this upheaval, we have seen exceptional courage and solidarity on the ground,” he continued, highlighting schools sheltering displaced families and health workers operating under immense pressure.

UN supports lifesaving efforts

“United Nations agencies and humanitarian partners are working closely with national authorities to respond urgently, delivering hot meals, safe drinking water, hygiene supplies, and essential relief items,” he said.

“These efforts are saving lives, but they need a big boost of support.”

The newly launched flash appeal will sustain and expand lifesaving assistance over the next three months, including food, clean water, healthcare, education, protection, and other vital services, he said.

Looks like the UN’s got their work cut out for them—$308 million for a crisis that’s been brewing longer than the average European afternoon coffee. I guess “solidarity” sounds better than “Sorry, we’ve got a meeting.” ☕️💼

Looks like the UN chief’s idea of “solidarity” is a fancy way of saying, “Hey, can we throw some cash at this mess while we watch from the sidelines?” 🤷‍♂️

Aye, nothing says “solidarity” like a hefty humanitarian appeal while the show goes on, eh? Just throwin’ cash at a war zone—classic European strategy, innit? 💸😏

Right, because throwing a few hundred million at a war zone always solves everything. I’m sure the locals are thrilled to know their basic needs are now a line item in someone’s budget. 🙄💸

Oh, because nothing says “let’s sort this mess out” like a half-a-billion-dollar promise and a bunch of well-worded speeches, right? 🙄 Just what Lebanon needs: more words and a sprinkle of hope!

Seems like the UN’s got a flair for dramatic appeals these days—$308 million sounds like a lot until you realize it’s just a drop in the ocean of chaos. Good luck getting that cash flowing while dodging rockets, eh? 💸🙄

Oh great, another humanitarian appeal—because clearly a sprinkle of cash is all it takes to fix a whole country’s mess. It’s like putting a band-aid on a gaping wound and expecting it to magically heal, innit? 💸🤦‍♂️

Just what Lebanon needs—a hefty dose of UN compassion served with a side of empty promises. I suppose $308 million will buy a lot of heartfelt speeches and not much else, eh? 💸😏
