“Hard-working Britons are heading out each day, putting in the effort, but are being let down by a political system that should be working for them.
They understandably want a stable economy, a secure and safe country, controlled borders, more money in their pockets, safer streets in their communities, opportunities for their children, reliable British energy in their homes, and an NHS that is there when they need it.
However, despite the rhetoric around secure borders, Labour leader Keir Starmer is reportedly not expected to announce a specific migration target—an issue that has similarly been a challenge for U.S. President Joe Biden.
On the economic front, the OECD’s latest economic report, published on Wednesday, highlighted another significant challenge for Starmer. The forecast indicates that the U.S. and Canada are expected to outperform the UK in terms of GDP growth, casting doubt on Britain’s ability to achieve the highly-ambitious goal of leading G7 nations in economic growth.
Government advisers, however, maintain that this shift in rhetoric does not mean conceding defeat. They insist that leading G7 growth remains a long-term aspiration for the UK, but acknowledge that a different approach is required to address economic challenges.
A second Labour official admitted that it’s “not helpful” for a government to tell voters that “things are going great” when many simply aren’t feeling the benefits in their daily lives.”
