Germany’s Merz Opposes Trump on Iran War

“There were different rounds within the coalition where we insisted very strongly that we should clearly reject this war,” Adis Ahmetovic, the leading foreign policy lawmaker for the SPD, told Deutschlandfunk radio earlier this week.

‘Economic and refugee fears’

But Merz is also being driven by the economic risks of a prolonged war, particularly as Germany’s energy-intensive manufacturing sector — which was already sputtering before the war started — is particularly vulnerable to cost spikes.

“Growth prospects are likely to continue to deteriorate,” Veronika Grimm, one of the country’s leading economists, wrote in an essay for German newspaper Handelsblatt. “For Germany, this means that hopes for a return to growth are once again being dampened.”

Germany is also expected to be among the EU countries most impacted if the escalating war in the Middle East creates a new refugee crisis.

Germany would be the most popular destination for Iranians fleeing the war, with 28 percent of Iranians identifying it as their most likely destination, according to a study by the Berlin-based Rockwool Foundation. That is due largely to the fact that Germany is already home to a large population of Iranian refugees.

These challenges come as Merz’s conservatives face a series of state elections in which rising anxiety over the economy and war abroad are playing a key part — and are helping propel the far right.

In view of the rising risks, Merz on Friday said he would work to develop a plan for ending the war through talks with the G7 and Israel.

“Germany is not a party to this war, and we do not want to become one,” Merz said. “And in that regard, all our efforts are focused on ending the war.”

Looks like Merz has taken on the role of the reluctant superhero, swooping in to save Germany from economic doom—who knew he was such a pacifist? 🤔 Maybe he should send a thank you card to Trump for the extra pressure!

Quite the masterclass in diplomacy, isn’t it? First, we say “no war,” then we ponder how to keep the economy from collapsing like a cheap IKEA table… Cheers to that! 🍻

Oh brilliant, because nothing says “let’s avoid a disaster” like a bunch of politicians talking about peace while the rest of us are just trying to keep the lights on. 🙄💼

Seems like Merz has suddenly become the peace guru we never knew we needed—who knew opposing a war could be a top-tier business strategy? 😂 But hey, who doesn’t love a good chat about ending conflicts while their economy is trying to stay afloat? Classic German efficiency!

  5. Seems like Merz has finally decided to take a break from his usual Sunday strolls to address the war—how very noble of him! I suppose the prospect of an economic hiccup really brings out the statesman in one, doesn’t it? 🤔🇩🇪

Seems like Merz thinks he’s the economic oracle now, trying to chat sense into a war with the finesse of a drunken Bavarian at Oktoberfest. 🍻 Who knew saving the economy involved rejecting a war, eh? Typical German efficiency! 😏

Oh, look at Merz, the economic oracle of Germany, suddenly worried about the energy-intensive sector—how quaint! As if playing peacekeeper will magically fix the economy while avoiding the awkward dinner conversations about refugees. 🍽️💼

Seems like Merz is doing a splendid job of channeling his inner diplomat while the rest of us just try to survive the energy crisis — who knew rejecting war could be the new trend? 😂

Seems like Merz is really pushing for peace, while secretly hoping the economy doesn’t implode like a cheap beer bottle at Oktoberfest. 🍻 But hey, who needs stability when you’ve got state elections to worry about, right?

Looks like Merz is playing the role of the peace-loving diplomat while the economy crumbles faster than a stale baguette. Maybe he thinks talking to G7 will magically fix Germany’s energy woes—good luck with that! 😏

Looks like Merz is carving out a new career as a peace negotiator—who would’ve thought? Maybe next he’ll be suggesting we all just sit down for a nice cuppa and sort out the world’s problems over biscuits. 🇩🇪☕️

Seems like Merz has suddenly discovered diplomacy while juggling a ticking economic time bomb – who knew? 🤔 Next, he’ll be suggesting we all just hug it out over a pint! 🍻

Oh, look who’s suddenly a peace ambassador—Mr. Merz, the man who probably thinks diplomacy is just a fancy word for “let’s have a chat over a pint.” 🍻 Too bad he can’t just wave a magic wand and fix the economy while he’s at it!

Seems like Merz is really trying to save Germany from becoming the new holiday hotspot for Iranian refugees… who knew politics could be such a humanitarian trip? 😏✈️

Typical Merz, always the voice of reason—who knew opposing wars could be so fashionable? 🇩🇪💼 Let’s just hope his economic forecasts come with a side of optimism, or we might need more than refugees to save our economy! 😂

  16. You know, it’s charming how Merz thinks he can negotiate world peace while juggling a sputtering economy and a refugee crisis. Maybe he should add “war negotiator” to his CV—right next to “expert in dodging responsibility”? 😂

  17. Typical Merz, always ready to put out fires while trying to keep his own house from burning down. 🙄 Who knew being a politician meant mastering the art of dodging bullets—both metaphorically and economically!
