In Beirut, Guterres Calls for End to Middle East War: Civilians ‘Deserve to Live Without Fear’

At a Beirut press conference, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the devastation from US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, which has caused significant regional destruction over the past two weeks. He noted Hezbollah’s retaliatory rocket attacks on Israel in support of Tehran led to a “devastating” Israeli bombing campaign, leaving parts of Lebanon “uninhabitable.”

Guterres stressed that the Lebanese people did not choose this conflict, saying, “The Lebanese people did not choose this war. They were dragged into it.” He called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, stating that the Middle East conflict has no military solution and requires a diplomatic resolution per the UN Charter.

He acknowledged the impact on both sides of the Blue Line, dividing southern Lebanon and northern Israel, monitored by UNIFIL under a Security Council mandate. Israelis sought shelter from Hezbollah’s rockets, while Lebanon suffered severe casualties, including hundreds killed, many of whom were children.

Over 800,000 people have been displaced from southern conflict areas and parts of southern Beirut due to comprehensive Israeli evacuation orders. Visiting a shelter, Guterres expressed sorrow over the displaced individuals’ accounts, highlighting that a ceasefire agreement from over a year ago did not halt ongoing violence, as both Hezbollah and Israeli forces violated the ceasefire.

He praised UNIFIL peacekeepers who have faced gunfire, stating, “Attacks against peacekeepers and positions are completely unacceptable and must cease.” Guterres acknowledged the Lebanese Government’s decision to enforce a “monopoly of arms,” urging Hezbollah to comply with this and other Security Council disarmament directives.

Guterres visited a Ghanaian peacekeeper in the hospital, injured while serving with UNIFIL amid the renewed southern Lebanon hostilities. He urged the international community to enhance involvement, stating, “Empower the Lebanese State and support the Lebanese Armed Forces to ensure they have the necessary capabilities and resources.”

He encouraged generous responses to the UN’s humanitarian appeal to aid the Government’s efforts. “The people of Lebanon, as well as those in Israel and across the region, deserve to live without fear and raise their children free from the sounds of sirens and strikes. They should be able to return home without the anxiety of having to flee again,” he said.

Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to support Lebanon’s people and institutions: “Together, we will not spare any effort in working towards the peaceful future that Lebanon and this region so justly deserve.”

Just what we needed, another high-profile call for peace—because clearly, that’s been working wonders in the region. At this rate, I might just order a round of drinks for all involved; it seems like that’s the only language they all understand! 🍷😏

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a UN chief playing the diplomat while the fireworks are still going off. How charming of him to suggest living without fear – perhaps he’d like to send an invoice for that optimism! 😂

  3. Looks like Guterres is really aiming for that Nobel Prize with his heartfelt pleas, as if just saying “stop it” will magically fix decades of conflict. It’s all very touching, but I suppose he forgot to bring the magic wand. 🪄

  4. Gotta love how the UN calls for peace while everyone’s busy throwing rockets like it’s an Olympic sport. Maybe next time they’ll just send a postcard instead? 🥴

Only in the Middle East could a press conference about peace sound like a bad script from a soap opera. Who knew living without fear was such a luxury? 🙄

  6. Imagine that, a UN Secretary-General actually asking for peace in the Middle East! What next, a cat trying to convince a dog to share its bone? 😂

Seems like Guterres is auditioning for a role in a soap opera, calling for peace while the world around him is a chaotic telenovela. Bless his heart, but I’m not sure a heartfelt speech will stop the missiles—perhaps he should try a bit of magic instead? 🎭💼

Typical Guterres, eh? Just another day at the office, calling for peace while the world spins madly on—who needs a plan when you can just ask nicely? 😂

Right, because telling people to stop fighting really worked wonders last time, eh? 🤦‍♂️ Maybe next he’ll suggest a group hug to solve it all—what a genius!

Isn’t it just charming how the UN thinks a few nice words will magically stop missiles? Maybe next time he should try a magic wand instead. 😏

Oh, brilliant! Let’s just throw a diplomatic tea party while the fireworks are going off, shall we? ☕️💥 C’mon, mate, how about we stop dragging people into wars they never asked for?

Just what we needed, another world leader reminding us that civilians deserve to live without fear—how original! 🤦‍♂️ Maybe next, he can suggest we all just hold hands and sing Kumbaya; that ought to do the trick, right? 🎶

Oh sure, because telling people they deserve to live without fear is just the magic wand we need to fix centuries of conflict. Guess diplomacy is the new black, eh? 😏✌️

Looks like Guterres is really pulling out the big guns with his heartfelt pleas—nothing like a press conference in a war zone to show you care, right? 🤔 Let’s hope his words have more impact than a chocolate teapot!

Oh, sure, because a heartfelt speech in Beirut is exactly what those living in rubble really need right now. Nothing like a bit of diplomatic charm to mend a war-torn country, right? 🥴

Right, because asking for a ceasefire from a press conference in Beirut is just what the Middle East needs—some more words! 🙄 Let’s hope they hear him over the sound of rockets and airstrikes, eh?
