The remarks challenge the EU’s tough stance on Moscow since the Ukraine invasion and could spark a heated debate about sanctions and Russian energy.
De Wever’s comments follow a poll showing his widespread support, with his popularity at a record high in Flemish-speaking areas and growing in Wallonia, possibly explaining his stance.
“The conflict must end for Europe’s interest. We must not be naive about Putin, a mistake to avoid. We need to rearm the border and normalize relations with Russia to regain cheap energy,” De Wever said in L’Echo, calling it “common sense.”
“European leaders secretly agree with me but won’t say it publicly,” De Wever reportedly added.
Tensions arise within his coalition, which includes the N-VA, Flemish socialist Vooruit, French-speaking liberals, and centrist parties, Les Engagés and CD&V.
“The prime minister can express his own views but can’t claim we want to beg Putin for cheap energy,” said Vooruit president Conner Rousseau to the VTM channel.
