Russia Breaks Through Ukrainian Defense in Donetsk as Putin-Trump Talks Near

On Friday, Russian leader Putin is scheduled to meet American President Donald Trump in Alaska to possibly discuss the cessation of the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv. Zelenskyy has expressed concerns that Russia might attempt to mislead the U.S. regarding their true intentions.

After initiating its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has reportedly demanded that Ukraine cede parts of the Donetsk region, which Moscow does not fully control, as part of a potential ceasefire agreement, a demand that Kyiv has refused.

Although the Ukrainian military denied that Russian troops have secured new positions in Donetsk after advancing around 15 kilometers over the past five days through a narrow area, DeepState, using open-source intelligence to monitor front-line developments, indicates that senior commanders are systematically minimizing the extent of the issue, a view supported by some military personnel on the ground.

While it is “premature” to declare the Russian advances in Donetsk an operational-level success, the Institute for the Study of War stated on Monday that Russian forces will “very likely seek to develop their tactical gains into an operational-level breakthrough in the coming days.”

This progression complicates Ukrainian logistics and endangers several cities, which are pivotal defense strongholds in the area, increasing the risk of encirclement and loss.

Ukraine’s General Staff announced on Monday their decision to deploy additional forces to the region.

Bohdan Krotevych, a former lieutenant colonel in Ukraine’s National Guard, described the situation in the area as “catastrophic” in a post on X. He attributed this to the fragmentation of units and personnel along the front line and a lack of a coherent strategy from senior leadership, a frequent criticism from Ukrainian military personnel and volunteers in recent months.

Ukrainian soldiers have also been warning about false battlefield reporting and senior commanders’ lack of awareness regarding the situation on the ground.

Looks like Putin and Trump are off to Alaska for a little chat while the actual battlefield’s a right mess – typical, innit? 🤷‍♂️ Who needs a coherent strategy when you can just play chess with real people’s lives?

Quite the diplomatic soirée in Alaska, eh? Nothing says “let’s solve a crisis” quite like a chat over salmon while Russian advances in Donetsk turn into a fine game of chess. 🐟♟️

Looks like Putin’s got a masterclass in diplomacy lined up with Trump in Alaska—because nothing says “peace talks” like a good ol’ game of chess with a side of, “Oops, did we just invade more?” 😂
