“We are dedicated to advancing this initiative, and it should be the primary focus at the upcoming NATO summit in a few weeks. The next major topic should be establishing a more European NATO,” he stated.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who is anticipated to meet Trump later on Wednesday, participated in the leaders’ discussions via video call. He is expected to deliver their message directly in a meeting that promises to be a balancing act.
“We seek heightened cooperation, both across the Atlantic and within Europe,” declared German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. “For us Germans, this is rooted in our history, our geography, and our constitution. Our neighbors should feel more secure as Germany strengthens.”
The leaders committed to “a stronger European presence within NATO, with Europe assuming greater responsibility for our mutual transatlantic security,” and vowed to enhance European defense collaboration by, for example, intensifying joint efforts to develop and acquire deep precision strike capabilities, according to a joint statement.
Trump has repeatedly criticized European allies for what he perceives as inadequate support for the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, known as Operation Epic Fury. However, his recent policy change on Ukraine appears to have encouraged European leaders.
“We are at a moment when Europeans and Americans are drawing closer once more,” stated French President Emmanuel Macron.
