Der Hitlergruß des AfD-Landeschefs

Pauline von Pezold and Frederik Schindler report exclusively on a 2020 photo that could trouble AfD Bundestag member and Saxony-Anhalt state head Martin Reichardt. The image shows Reichardt performing a Hitler salute during the ceremonial submission of a membership application, according to witnesses. While the state association and Reichardt dismiss the scene as a harmless “knighting” and humorous “joke,” investigations reveal contradictory timelines in this explanation. The photo can be viewed here.

Additionally, the pair discuss the party’s vastly different stances on the national football team. While leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla publicly distance themselves from ethnic remarks, other officials like Björn Höcke continue to make openly racist statements regarding national players’ skin color and origin. Court rulings indicate such remarks support classifying the AfD as a suspected right-wing extremist entity.

Von Pezold and Schindler highlight the AfD’s contradictory view of the DDR past and the Stasi. Despite party leaders often casting the modern constitutional protection agency as “Stasi spies,” a member recently met former DDR State Council Chairman Egon Krenz, and a Brandenburg report shows several AfD regional parliament members have documented Stasi ties.

“Inside AfD” is POLITICO’s podcast on Germany’s most controversial party. Despite its radicalization and surveillance by the authorities, the AfD continues to grow. How is this possible? What motivates its followers, strategists, and opponents? How does the party function internally? What does its rise mean for Germany’s political system?

Answers are provided every Wednesday by Pauline von Pezold from POLITICO and Frederik Schindler from WELT — calmly but critically.

Just when you thought the AfD couldn’t dig a deeper hole, they go and pull a stunt that even a jester would find too on-the-nose. 🤦‍♂️ “Harmless knightings” and jokes? Right, more like a comedy show that’s lost the plot entirely! 😂

Looks like Mr. Reichardt’s idea of ‘networking’ is straight out of a history book, eh? 🤦‍♂️ Classic case of mixing humor with a sprinkle of bad taste—like pairing sauerkraut with champagne! 🍾

Seems like a classic case of “just a bit of fun” gone hilariously wrong—who knew membership applications came with a side of historical reenactment? 😂 Talk about taking party politics to the next level!

Oh, brilliant move by the AfD—nothing screams “we’re just a light-hearted bunch” like a Hitler salute at a membership party! 😂 Reminds me of that classic German humor: if you can’t laugh at history, just repeat it, right?

Oh, what a charming little photo op! Just what every political party needs for a bit of light-hearted banter at the membership drive, right? 😏

Looks like Martin Reichardt has truly mastered the art of “vintage humor,” right up there with dad jokes at a family barbecue. 😏 Just what we need to keep politics spicy!

Oh, nothing like a bit of historical reenactment to spice up a membership application, eh? Just what we need – the AfD turning political meetings into a scene from a bad remake of a Nazi film. 😂

Oh, just when you thought the AfD couldn’t get any more charming, they serve up a vintage photo op that’ll make you wish for a time machine—only to send them back, of course. 😂

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “2020” like a cheeky salute and a membership application—truly, the golden age of political humor here in the Fatherland! 😂

Oh, a little salute during a membership application? Just the sort of “funny” gag that keeps politics spicy, right? 😂 Makes you wonder if they offer a side of historical revisionism with that!

Causes of Democratic Backsliding

Causes of Democratic Backsliding

Democracy rarely collapses in a single dramatic moment; it is often hollowed out gradually, through steps like court-packing, hostile media laws, weakened watchdogs, a frightened opposition, and the public being told that rights are obstacles. This gradual weakening, known as democratic backsliding, affects Europe and other fragile democracies, as well as societies that believe elections alone su
