BRUSSELS — Frédéric Bernard, the former chief of staff to European Council President Charles Michel, has been appointed as Belgium’s ambassador to the United States, according to two Belgian officials.
Bernard, who has served as Michel’s head of cabinet and sherpa since 2020, played a pivotal role in organizing and managing European Council meetings, where leaders of EU member states convene. Prior to that, he worked closely with Michel during his tenure as Belgium’s prime minister.
The seasoned diplomat had been considered for several high-profile positions within the EU, including the role of the bloc’s envoy to Canada—ultimately awarded to the former chief of staff of another Belgian official, Didier Reynders—and a post within the Council of the EU, which represents the governments of member states.
