The parliament speaker announced that passage through the strait would be restricted to a “designated route” and require Iranian authorization. He warned that the status of the waterway’s openness would depend on the situation on the ground rather than social media discourse.
Qalibaf’s statement followed a denial by the Iranian foreign ministry’s spokesperson regarding any plans to transfer Iran’s enriched uranium overseas, emphasizing that this option was never considered. On Friday, spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei reiterated Iran’s stance that its enriched uranium would remain in the country, dismissing Trump’s earlier suggestion that the U.S. might work with Iran to transport the uranium to America.
Bloomberg reported that Trump claimed Iran agreed to an indefinite suspension of its nuclear program. Trump’s phone interview on Friday indicated that the suspension would be “unlimited,” according to the outlet.
The U.S. Treasury Department extended its temporary waiver on sanctions for Russian oil shipments to alleviate shortages due to the Iran conflict, a few days after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent initially ruled against it. The immediate reason for the policy reversal by the Trump administration was not disclosed.
The renewed waiver, issued late Friday, allows countries to purchase Russian oil on vessels loaded from that day until May 16. The previous waiver had expired on April 11.
