Lille (France) – During a visit to the site where over 70 migrants tragically lost their lives in 2024 while attempting to cross the English Channel, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau expressed his readiness for a confrontation with London regarding immigration policies.
In an interview with La Voix du Nord published on Friday, he emphasized the need for a new relationship with the UK, stating, “Brexit has altered the dynamics. A comprehensive agreement between the United Kingdom and the EU is essential to truly address the situation.”
Retailleau asserted, “If a showdown is necessary, I will not hesitate to engage.” He highlighted that France cannot tackle this issue on its own, and that the UK, along with other European partners, must also take responsibility.
He further noted, “In the long run, there must be a legal pathway for immigration to Great Britain, as well as a readmission strategy not just for France, but for neighboring countries as well.” (November 29, 2024)
