Belgian authorities conducted searches at the residences of Didier Reynders on Tuesday, mere days after his tenure as European Commissioner for Justice came to an end, according to media reports.
The searches were followed by questioning of Reynders, as reported by Le Soir and Follow the Money. Reynders had served as the EU Justice Commissioner up until the past weekend.
An Schoonjans, a magistrate with the Brussels prosecutor general’s office, confirmed to POLITICO that an investigation is underway but refrained from providing further details. Belgian police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This is not the first time Reynders has faced scrutiny. In 2019, he was the subject of a corruption and money laundering investigation conducted by Belgian police. At the time, Reynders denied any wrongdoing, and the charges were eventually dismissed by prosecutors.
Earlier this year, Reynders made an unsuccessful bid to head the Council of Europe.
