Strasbourg (dpa) – EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will once again face scrutiny over no-confidence votes against her commission team during a parliamentary discussion on Monday evening. A spokesperson for the Commission confirmed that von der Leyen will participate in the debate concerning two no-confidence motions, where she will respond to the faction representatives’ speeches in the plenary session.
The motions were put forth by the right-wing PfE faction and the Left faction. The PfE group has criticized von der Leyen’s climate and migration strategies, accusing her of lacking transparency and imposing censorship. The Left faction contends that the Commission has not applied sufficient pressure on the Israeli government regarding its military actions amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. They also oppose the EU’s customs agreement with the USA, arguing it disproportionately benefits the US.
The vote on these motions is scheduled for Thursday, but a sufficient majority for passage is deemed unlikely. In July, von der Leyen’s Commission successfully navigated an initial no-confidence vote. (October 5)
