EU Anti-Fraud Office Considers Investigation into Senior Far-Right Patriots Official

Transparency International requested the EU’s anti-fraud office (OLAF) on April 24 to investigate administrative failures and recommended disciplinary action against former Belgian MEP and Secretary-General of the Patriots group, Philip Claeys, as per a letter viewed by POLITICO. Transparency International claims Claeys was accountable due to his approval of the spending.

An OLAF spokesperson confirmed receipt of the information and stated, “We cannot comment further at this stage.” They clarified that examining the matter doesn’t mean an investigation has been opened and that a decision to investigate follows an initial assessment.

Transparency International also urged OLAF to assess whether Claeys’ roles as ID’s former secretary-general and current position with the Patriots, where he controls EU funds, present ongoing risks to the Union budget.

In September 2025, the Parliament’s budgetary control committee requested the Parliament’s secretary-general to reclaim funds from the Patriots.

At the time, the Patriots stated on X that the group was subject to a politically driven “witch hunt” and asserted it is not the same entity as ID, whose previous accounts had been closed.

Oh, look at that – a far-right patriot under scrutiny! Who would’ve thunk it? 🤔 Just another day in the bureaucratic circus, eh?

Oh, just what we needed—another “patriot” tangled in the web of EU funds. Talk about a masterclass in fiscal responsibility! 😂💸

  3. Seems like Claeys has mastered the art of spending other people’s money while playing the victim—quite the talent in this game of political charades. 🙄💸

  4. Seems like the only thing more transparent than their finances is their desperate attempt to play the victim. Classic move, innit? 😂

Looks like someone’s about to discover that managing EU funds isn’t as easy as pinning a flag on a lapel. 🙈 Hope Claeys has his best excuses ready – the EU loves a good drama! 🎭💸

  6. Oh, fantastic! Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the EU decides to investigate a “patriot” for spending too much of our cash – and here I thought politicians were just in it for the love of the people. 🤔💸

Seems like someone’s finally getting the ol’ magnifying glass out for the “Patriots” – who knew transparency could be a thing in politics? 🤔💸

Seems like the far-right Patriots are in a bit of a pickle – maybe they should’ve kept their spending habits a touch more… shall we say, “discreet”? 🤔💸 It’s almost like they thought EU funds were just there for a jolly old time!

  9. Looks like the old saying about “too many cooks spoil the broth” applies here—only this time it’s more like “too many patriots spoil the budget.” 😂 Who knew being a far-right official came with such a hefty price tag?

Looks like the EU is really on the ball with their investigations these days—next, they might check if my grandmother’s biscuit recipe violates trade regulations. 🍪💼

Seems like the only thing more transparent than their finances is their desperation to play the victim card. 😏 Typical EU drama – can we get a popcorn emoji over here? 🍿

Oh, the irony! A far-right patriot under scrutiny for spending money—who would’ve thought? 😏 It’s like a cat complaining about the price of fish while sitting in a seafood restaurant! 🐟💸
