Following a meeting, described as “highly constructive,” Magyar expressed optimism about Hungary soon receiving EU funds, emphasizing no conditions were imposed against Hungary’s national interests.
Von der Leyen shared on X about a positive exchange with Péter Magyar in Brussels, focusing on steps needed to release EU funds stalled due to corruption and rule-of-law issues. The European Commission plans to support efforts to address these concerns and realign with European values, with teams working closely together.
Hungary’s recovery fund, including around €10 billion expiring if conditions aren’t met by August, is at risk. Hungary must achieve 27 “super milestones” related to public procurement, judicial independence, academic freedom, and anti-corruption measures.
Magyar attributes fund blockage to “industrial-scale corruption” under Orbán.
Magyar will be sworn in on May 9, starting his premiership.
