EU Aims to Eliminate Russian Gas by the End of 2027

Strasbourg, France – On Tuesday, the European Commission announced its strategy to eliminate imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027.

In light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that “it is time for Europe to completely sever its energy connections” with Russia under Vladimir Putin.

The Commission’s proposal outlines a phased approach: it plans to prohibit new contracts and terminate existing short-term contracts with Russian companies by the end of 2025, followed by a complete cessation of all imports two years later.

This plan will be presented to both member states and the European Parliament for consideration.

The percentage of Russian gas imports into the European Union has decreased significantly, dropping from 45% in 2021 to just 19% in 2024.

While pipeline supplies have diminished, the EU has increasingly turned to liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is transported by ship, regasified, and then integrated into the European supply network. Currently, Russia accounts for 20% of LNG imports in 2024, contributing 20 billion cubic meters, which places it second to the United States, which holds a 45% share.

Oh, marvellous! Nothing says “we’re all in this together” like a master plan to kick out your energy supplier by 2027—what’s next, a strategy to stop relying on the French for cheese? 🧀😆

Great plan, really! Who needs energy security when you can play geopolitical chess with gas pipelines? 😅 Just hope the heating bill doesn’t come from a game of musical chairs! 🪑💨

Oh sure, because who needs a reliable energy source when you can just play musical chairs with LNG? 🎶💨 Can’t wait to see how “severing connections” works out when winter hits, but hey, at least we’ll have the warmth of our ideals! 😂✨

Oh great, just what we need—another ambitious plan that sounds fab on paper but will probably have us all shivering in the dark come winter. 😂 Can’t wait to see how we’ll be lighting our homes with candles by 2028!

Oh, brilliant plan, really! Who needs a stable energy supply when you can play geopolitical chess with gas prices? 🕵️‍♂️💸 Just wait until winter, then we’ll see how cozy those “moral high grounds” feel! 😏

  6. Looks like the EU’s got a new game plan—cutting off Russian gas by 2027! Quite the ambitious move, isn’t it? I mean, who needs energy security when you can have a grand exit strategy? 😏💨

Oh, fantastic move, EU! Because who needs a stable energy supply when you can just play geopolitical chess? 🧐 I suppose we’ll all be warming our croissants with a hand-cranked gas stove by 2028! 🍞🔥
