Fico: Slovakia Rejects European Commission’s Proposal to Halt All Energy Supplies from Russia

Bratislava – Slovakia acknowledges the pressing objective of reducing the European Union’s (EU) energy reliance on non-member states. However, the recent proposal from the European Commission (EC), which calls for an immediate halt to imports of gas, oil, and nuclear fuel from Russia, is deemed unacceptable by Slovakia in its current form. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) expressed this sentiment on Wednesday, as reported by TASR.

Fico stated, “I possess extensive data pointing to the fact that we are embarking on a perilous path. While we support the strategic aim of decreasing energy dependence, Slovakia is prepared to collaborate with the EU on this matter. However, I cannot endorse what I view as economic self-destruction; it would be utterly reckless to propose the complete cessation of gas, nuclear, and oil imports simply because a new iron curtain is being drawn between the Western world and potentially Russia and other nations.”

The Prime Minister emphasized Slovakia’s willingness to actively participate in discussions regarding legislative proposals that will stem from the Commission’s roadmap. He insisted that the unique circumstances and experiences of individual EU member states should be considered. “From today onward, we will vigorously alert the EC to the risks involved with this document, which I view as a political gamble. It is an economically irresponsible proposal,” Fico asserted, warning that implementation could lead to significant harm to the EU, increased energy prices, and diminished competitiveness.

Currently, Prime Minister Fico noted that it remains uncertain how the legislation will be ratified—whether it will require unanimous approval or can proceed with a qualified majority.

“If a qualified majority is the approach, it could lead to larger nations imposing their will. I would find this highly regrettable and advocate for a unanimous agreement to ensure the document carries weight,” he added. (May 7)

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a little economic self-destruction to spice up the morning coffee, eh? Let’s just keep the lights on and hope for the best while we’re at it! 😅💡

Looks like Slovakia is ready to play poker with the EU, but let’s hope they don’t run out of chips before the bluffing begins! 😂 No gas, no oil? Sounds like a recipe for a very chilly Bratislava winter! 🥶

Typical Fico, always ready to play the balancing act between “let’s save the planet” and “but, you know, we really like our energy supply.” 🙄 It’s like saying no to dessert while eyeing the cake—good luck with that! 🍰

Looks like Fico’s got his thinking cap on—who needs energy independence when you can just keep the lights on with a little help from your ‘friends’ in the east? 🤪 Let’s just hope he’s got a good battery backup plan! ⚡️

Looks like Fico thinks the EU’s energy plan is a little too ambitious, like trying to run a marathon straight after a night out in Bratislava. 🚕💨 Maybe he’s just worried about his gas bills hitting the roof faster than a politician’s promises!

Can’t wait to see how “economic self-destruction” goes down on the EU’s shopping list. Maybe we should just start burning euros for warmth instead? 🤔💸

Oh, brilliant! Let’s just cut off our energy lifeline and see how that goes—might as well invite winter in for a warm hug. 🍂 Who needs gas when you can fuel your economy with good intentions, eh? 😂

Oh, brilliant strategy there, eh? Let’s just quit our energy lifeline and hope for the best—what could possibly go wrong? 🙄 #EconomicSuicide
