Development of Kortrijk-Dutsel Sports Park in Holsbeek Delayed as KDN United Raises Cost Concerns

Holsbeek – In the municipality of Holsbeek, plans for a new sports park near the Kortrijk-Dutsel recycling facility have come to a halt. Although the municipality received a construction permit six months ago, local football club KDN United—originally expected to fund the canteen and changing rooms—has pulled out due to escalating costs.

Construction of the new sports complex has stalled despite initial momentum. KDN United had planned to secure a loan for its share of the development, but mounting financial pressures have made that plan unfeasible.

The club, responsible for financing key facilities like the canteen and locker rooms, is grappling with deteriorating infrastructure and budgetary constraints. According to a report from VRT, KDN United’s current conditions are dire.

“Our canteen and our fields are worn out. Our ceiling is about to collapse, there are mice and rats. There are tarpaulins on the roof to keep the rain out. This cannot continue,”

said club chairwoman Ilse Organe.

While the municipality has offered the club the possibility of relocating to the new Kortrijk-Dutsel site, KDN United has deemed the €1.6 million construction cost unaffordable. The municipality would cover the cost of the new playing fields, while KDN United would be responsible for the buildings.

“We were shocked by the price tag. Around 1.6 million euros. We simply do not have that much money. We absolutely want to continue to exist, but we have no idea how we can raise so much money in such a short time. The people of Holsbeek are very fond of the club, but supporting us financially is something else,”

Ilse added with concern.

Still, the municipality is determined to continue with the project.

“The club will receive a subsidy of 350,000 euros from Flanders. Their infrastructure is on municipal land, but they have to place the building themselves. Otherwise, 10 other associations will be here tomorrow, so to speak, wanting a building,”

stated Mayor Bram Van Baelen (Team Holsbeek).

“We are still going for it in any case. Perhaps we can work on a smaller scale or look for other sources of financing.”

What Caused the Standstill in Holsbeek’s Sports Park Project?

The delay in Holsbeek’s sports park development aligns with challenges typical of large-scale infrastructure projects, including financial shortfalls, logistics, and planning complexities. While the precise reasons in Holsbeek are not detailed publicly, similar initiatives across other regions suggest that issues like funding gaps, land use planning, and permit delays often cause such halts.

For example, a project in Cochrane, Alberta, was delayed due to revisions in site layout and stormwater management. Similarly, Penn Township in the U.S. experienced slowdowns due to grant dependencies and construction material availability.

In Holsbeek, it’s likely that a combination of insufficient funding and a lack of internal agreement on design or financial responsibility has caused the current pause. Without additional local data, it is fair to assume these commonly encountered setbacks are affecting the continuation of the project.

Oh, brilliant! Who knew a sports park would cost more than your average European vacation? Guess we’ll just stick to our old “rustic” fields with the charming mouse population instead! 🐭⚽️

What a surprise! A sports park caught in a financial game of “pass the parcel”—only this time, everyone’s left holding an empty bag. 🤷‍♂️ €1.6 million? Might as well ask them to fund the next space mission! 🚀💸

Ah, the majestic dream of a sports park in Holsbeek has hit a snag—who knew €1.6 million could buy you a used car instead of a canteen? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe they should just put up a “Bring Your Own Chair” sign and call it a day! 🪑💸
