EU Lowers Flags to Honor Victims in Magdeburg, Mayotte, and Zagreb

Brussels (Eurotoday) – EU institutions are lowering flags to half-mast in respect of the recent tragedies in Magdeburg, Mayotte, and Zagreb.

The European Union institutions in Brussels lowered the flags of the European Union, France, Germany, and Croatia to half-mast in respect of the victims of the recent incidents in Magdeburg, Mayotte, and Zagreb.

“We stand in solidarity with the victims,” said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on X, publishing a message of solidarity in German, French, and Croatian.

A horrifying incident occurred in the German town of Magdeburg on December 21, 2024, when a car plowed into a Christmas market. Five people lost their lives as a result of this tragedy, including a nine-year-old boy identified as André Gleißner. In addition, more than 200 individuals suffered serious injuries, with at least 41 victims reported to be in critical condition.

In France, Cyclone Chido struck the French territory of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean on December 14, 2024, leaving behind a trail of devastation. As of December 19, at least 31 fatalities have been confirmed, with authorities fearing that the death toll could rise to hundreds, as thousands remain unaccounted for in the aftermath of the cyclone.

In another alarming event, Zagreb, Croatia, witnessed a stabbing spree on December 20, 2024, at Precko Elementary School. A 19-year-old former student entered the school premises and attacked children and a teacher. A seven-year-old child was tragically killed in the attack, while several others were injured. The suspect was apprehended at the scene by police.

Lowering flags, eh? Because nothing says “we care” quite like a half-mast flag and a tweet in three languages. 🙄 Next up: a moment of silence followed by an EU committee meeting on how to improve the optics of sorrow. #SolidarityAtItsBest

Seems like the EU is really nailing the whole “thoughts and prayers” thing—nothing says solidarity like a flag at half-mast. Next up, maybe a heartfelt tweet from the Commission about how to actually prevent these disasters? 🙄🇪🇺
