The announcement followed Pope Leo’s signing of an encyclical, a letter from the pontiff giving instructions or guidance on moral issues to bishops.
The upcoming encyclical, expected to be released in the next few weeks, will address AI in the context of the church’s social teaching, which covers topics like labor, justice, and peace.
This isn’t Pope Leo’s first engagement with AI-related issues. Shortly after his election in May 2025, he told cardinals that the Catholic Church must share its social teachings to tackle AI’s challenges regarding “human dignity, justice, and labor.”
In June 2025, Pope Leo warned of AI’s potential negative effects. While acknowledging its benefits, he cautioned that AI could be misused for “selfish gain” and to “foment conflict and aggression.”
“We’re all concerned about children and young people and how AI might affect their intellectual and neurological development. Our youth should be supported, not obstructed, in their path to maturity and responsibility,” the pope stated.
