Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming trip to France, along with a previously announced visit to Spain in June, highlights his efforts to strengthen relations with secular Catholic nations in Europe. It marks the first papal visit to France in 18 years. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his approval, stating on social media that the visit in September will be a significant and joyous occasion for the country and its Catholic community. Macron had extended the invitation during his April visit to the Vatican, alongside Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline from the French Bishops’ Conference. Aveline noted the joy and responsibility of the event. The Pope’s itinerary in France includes a visit to Lourdes, a famous Catholic pilgrimage site. In June, Pope Leo is set to visit Spain, where he will meet Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid and travel to Barcelona and the Canary Islands.
