Tensions regarding Israel’s involvement in the event arose earlier in the week when Noam Bettan’s performance of “Michelle” received boos and chants during the semifinal. Organizers reported that four audience members were removed for “disruptive behavior.”
Bulgaria achieved its first victory in the competition, having entered in 2005. The country returned in 2026 after a four-year hiatus due to financial issues at the public broadcaster.
Bulgaria’s lively dance anthem delighted the crowd in Vienna, although it wasn’t initially a favorite compared to entries from Finland or Australia.
This year, several countries opted out (Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Iceland), citing Israel’s conflict in Gaza and the ensuing humanitarian crisis as their reason.
Protesters also marched through Vienna on Saturday, opposing Israel’s participation in the contest, with chants of “boycott Israel, boycott ESC [Eurovision Song Contest]” and “no stage for genocide.”
Later on Saturday night, another protest against Israel’s involvement led to the arrest of 14 people, confirmed by Vienna police. The arrests occurred because the individuals refused to remove masks that hid their identities.
