BRUSSELS – Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, expressed the European Union’s full support for the widespread protests in Iran and condemned the “violent repression” of the demonstrators.
“The streets of Tehran, and cities worldwide, resonate with the calls of Iranian women and men for freedom. They demand freedom of speech, assembly, movement, and, above all, the right to live. Europe stands firmly with them. We categorically denounce the violent suppression of these legitimate protests. Those accountable will be remembered as being on the wrong side of history,” von der Leyen stated on platform X.
She urged for the immediate release of all detained protesters, the restoration of internet access, and the respect for fundamental rights. According to the American news agency Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), at least 65 individuals have been killed and over 2,300 arrested across Iran in the past 13 days amid anti-regime demonstrations. The agency, which focuses on human rights issues in Iran, reported that protests have taken place in 512 locations across 180 cities. (January 10)
