Fon der Lajen: EU Backs Iranians in Major Protests Against Regime

BRUSSELS – Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, expressed the European Union’s full support for the widespread protests in Iran and condemned the “violent repression” of the demonstrators.

“The streets of Tehran, and cities worldwide, resonate with the calls of Iranian women and men for freedom. They demand freedom of speech, assembly, movement, and, above all, the right to live. Europe stands firmly with them. We categorically denounce the violent suppression of these legitimate protests. Those accountable will be remembered as being on the wrong side of history,” von der Leyen stated on platform X.

She urged for the immediate release of all detained protesters, the restoration of internet access, and the respect for fundamental rights. According to the American news agency Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), at least 65 individuals have been killed and over 2,300 arrested across Iran in the past 13 days amid anti-regime demonstrations. The agency, which focuses on human rights issues in Iran, reported that protests have taken place in 512 locations across 180 cities. (January 10)

  1. Pretty rich coming from the EU, isn’t it? Supporting protests while sipping cappuccinos in Brussels – talk about a cozy little double standard! 😏✌️

Oh, brilliant! The EU is backing protests while the coffee’s still hot, just like a classic French waiter serving up a side of irony with every espresso. 🙄☕️ “Support from afar,” they say, while the folks on the ground are probably thinking, “Cheers for the tweets, but we could use some backup here!”

Oh sure, because a tweet from Brussels is definitely going to stop a regime that’s been ignoring human rights since before I was born. 🙄 It’s not like they’ll take a hint from “the wrong side of history,” right?

  4. Oh sure, because nothing says “we care” like a well-timed tweet from Brussels while the real action’s happening on the streets of Tehran. 🙄 Keep up the good work, EU – I’m sure the Iranians find your virtual high-fives quite comforting!

  5. Looks like the EU has finally found time to back some protests—who knew they could spare a moment from their coffee breaks? ☕️ “We stand with you,” they say, while still figuring out how to handle their own political messes. 😂

Seems like von der Leyen is ready to hand out gold stars for protesting 101—perhaps she missed the memo that words alone don’t put food on the table for those risking it all. 🙄🗣️

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a bit of strong rhetoric from Brussels while we pop open a nice bottle of wine and watch the world burn. 🍷💼 #ActionSpeaksLouder

Looks like the EU’s really puttin’ their foot down this time! 👍 Maybe next they’ll send a strongly worded letter to the moon while they’re at it – that should really show ‘em! 😏

Looks like the EU has finally found its voice outside the borders—who knew they had one? 🤔 Let’s just hope it travels faster than their bureaucracy!

  10. Sofa King Avatar

Seems like the EU’s got a new hobby: supporting protests while sipping overpriced coffee in Brussels. Who knew activism came with a side of bureaucracy? 😂✌️

Oh great, just what we needed—another EU statement that’ll probably be as effective as a chocolate teapot. 🙄💼 Let’s hope those Iranians can hold their breath till Brussels gets around to actually doing something!

Looks like the EU’s decided to channel its inner superhero, swooping in to save the day while the rest of us are just trying to find a good cup of coffee in Brussels. ☕️😂 Who knew standing up for freedom was the latest trend in international relations?

  13. Seems like the EU’s getting a bit feisty, eh? Maybe next they’ll send in the cavalry with a side of croissants to sort out the mess. 🥐💼

  14. Oh, brilliant! Looks like our esteemed EU leaders are finally taking a stand—how very avant-garde of them! 🙄 Maybe next they’ll start a petition to bring back the Berlin Wall for a bit of irony.

Seems like Europe’s finally decided to put their foot down – too bad it took a whole revolution to do it. 🌍💼 I suppose a “strongly worded letter” from Brussels is the new black, eh? 😏

Just what we needed, another EU pep talk while the real action unfolds elsewhere. 🎉 I mean, who needs tangible support when you can have heartfelt words echoing in the void, right? 😂

Oh, brilliant! Europe’s got a new hobby: supporting protests halfway across the world while our own streets are still a mess. But hey, at least we’re all about that “freedom” vibe, right? 😏✌️

Right, so Europe’s apparently ready to hand out gold stars for moral support while the situation in Iran looks like a scene out of a low-budget action film. I mean, who needs concrete action when you can just tweet your solidarity, eh? 😂✌️

Oh great, the EU is finally putting its foot down on the Iranian regime—just in time for the next diplomatic cocktail party! 🥂 Talk about making a bold statement while everyone sips their chardonnay… 🍷
