Today, European Council President Antonio Costa emphasized the European Union’s commitment to support Greenland and Denmark as necessary, firmly stating that violations of international law will not be tolerated anywhere.
On the subject of Greenland, Costa asserted, “Greenland belongs to its people. Decisions regarding Denmark and Greenland cannot be made without Denmark and Greenland.” This declaration was made during a speech marking Cyprus’s assumption of the rotating EU presidency.
He reaffirmed, “They have the complete support and solidarity of the European Union.”
Recently, the U.S. president has expressed intentions to control Greenland, stating its significance to U.S. military strategy and suggesting that Denmark has failed to adequately safeguard it.
Costa noted that Cyprus is taking over the EU Council during a time when the rules-based international order faces challenges and urged member states to stand firm against these threats.
He proclaimed, “The European Union cannot condone violations of international law, whether in Cyprus, Latin America, Greenland, Ukraine, or Gaza,” asserting that “Europe will continue to be a steadfast defender of international law and multilateralism.” (07/01/26)
