Nuñez labeled the unrest as “absolutely unacceptable.”
Far-right leader Marine Le Pen stated on X: “Only in France does a football club’s victory ignite riots. Only in France do people feel compelled to barricade themselves in their homes on a victory night to avoid violence.”
Valérie Pécresse, head of the Île-de-France region including Paris, urged for sanctions against the violent individuals. “The senseless rioters who think they can destroy everything are tarnishing the reputation of Paris and France!” Pécresse expressed on X. “Victory nights in Paris and the Île-de-France region should be peaceful celebrations!”
Similar disturbances occurred last May in Paris after Paris Saint-Germain’s win in the previous Champions League final, leading to over 500 arrests and two deaths, and spurring widespread political outrage.
Paris Saint-Germain triumphed over Arsenal in a dramatic final in Budapest, winning 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in extra time, becoming the only French team to win the competition twice.
The team will hold a victory parade at the Champ-de-Mars on Sunday afternoon before meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. Approximately 6,000 police officers have been deployed for the parade.
