The EU has condemned the killing of five Al Jazeera journalists, including correspondent Anas al-Sharif, in an Israeli airstrike near the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City. This statement was issued following a video conference with EU foreign ministers.
The Israeli army claimed that Anas al-Sharif was the leader of a “terrorist cell” linked to Hamas and held him accountable for ongoing rocket attacks against Israel.
EU officials acknowledged these accusations, with Mr. Kallas stating, “However, such claims must be substantiated with clear evidence, in line with the rule of law, to protect journalists from being targeted.”
During a period when Israel is advancing its operational plans in the besieged Palestinian territory, six journalists, including five from the Qatari network, were killed in an Israeli strike on a tent in Gaza City, located outside the Al-Shifa hospital.
Since the onset of the war, foreign journalists have been barred from entering the Gaza Strip, forcing international media to depend on local journalists, who have suffered greatly in the conflict.
Ms. Kallas also urged Israel to facilitate increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, stating, “Although aid is beginning to flow more, the needs are still significantly greater. We call on Israel to permit the entry of more trucks and to enhance aid distribution.”
