Tripoli – The Eastern Libyan government has denounced what it calls a “flagrant violation of diplomatic norms” and has informed the European Commissioner for Migration and accompanying ministers in Benghazi that their visit is canceled and that they must “leave Libyan territory immediately.”
Commissioner Magnus Brunner, along with Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Maltese Interior Minister Byron Camilleri, and Greek Migration Minister Thanos Plevris, has been declared “persona non grata” by Oussama Hamad, head of the Eastern government.
Additionally, Mr. Hamad announced on Sunday that visas are now required for members of diplomatic missions and international organizations, who must also “refrain from any official meetings or visits in Libya without prior approval” from his government.
Earlier that morning, European officials had met in Tripoli with national unity government head Abdelhamid Dbeibah to discuss illegal immigration. (July 8, 2025)
