Israel Acknowledges Armenian Genocide Amid Strained Relations with Turkey

The Armenian genocide led to the deaths of around 1.5 million Armenians from 1915 to 1923. While Turkey rejects this term, over 30 countries, including France, Germany, the U.S., Lebanon, and Syria, recognize the mass killings as genocide.

The Israeli government’s decision occurs amid tensions between two regional powers, previously strong allies, which have strained lately. This follows Israel’s conflict in Gaza, which resulted in over 73,000 Palestinian deaths after Hamas’s attack on Israeli civilians on October 7, 2023.

Turkey, with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has consistently accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, a claim Israel denies. Prior to discussing the resolution, Turkey’s Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz labeled Israel’s move as “an attempt to cover up their own crimes.”

Sa’ar stated the vote wasn’t “retaliation for the open hostility and negative actions of Turkey, under Erdogan, towards Israel.” He added, “Moreover, Turkey’s false narratives against Israel do not shield it from historical facts.”

Seems like Israel’s playing a high-stakes game of diplomatic chess while Turkey’s busy throwing shade—who knew history could be such a gossip? 🤷‍♂️
