Uzhhorod – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed on Friday, following a meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico near Uzhhorod, that Slovakia should be included in the new security system. This statement was made in relation to the security guarantees being prepared by the coalition of the willing after a peace agreement is reached. He also expressed gratitude to Slovakia for its support of Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU, according to TASR.
Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned during a press conference that he had discussed the prior day’s talks among coalition leaders with US President Donald Trump. “We are collaborating with our partners and believe it’s essential for Slovakia to be part of this new security framework,” he remarked.
The Ukrainian president noted that this was his first meeting with Fico in Ukraine. He emphasized the significance of their ongoing dialogue and called for continued pragmatic cooperation between Slovakia and Ukraine at ministerial and institutional levels, rather than solely between leaders.
He conveyed his appreciation to Slovakia for its backing of Ukraine’s EU membership ambitions. “Currently, there are discussions about clusters, and we view EU membership as integral to our security guarantees. European institutions, capitals, and Washington support us in this endeavor. This is crucial, and I thank the Prime Minister for his backing of Ukraine’s EU accession,” Zelensky stated.
Zelensky also stressed that Russian oil and gas have no future, pointing to the current US government’s position on limiting Russian energy supplies to Europe.
“We are prepared to ensure energy stability for Slovakia and our other partners while pursuing joint projects. Our guiding principle is clear: no Russian energy sources,” affirmed Zelensky.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized the importance of economic and infrastructure cooperation with Slovakia, mentioning initiatives related to cross-border movement and enhancing border capacities. He also referenced electricity supplies from Slovakia amidst ongoing Russian drone and missile threats. He highlighted the integration of Ukrainian railways into the European network, stating, “We have countless similar projects ahead. Ukraine will undoubtedly become part of the European Union,” he asserted. (September 5)
