The European Union’s top watchdog expressed dissatisfaction in a report released late Monday.
“The Ombudsman concluded that the way the Commission managed the public access request—especially the delay in declaring the absence of documents—constituted maladministration,” stated European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly.
A statement from the Ombudsman’s office further highlighted the issue. O’Reilly found it “particularly regrettable” that the Commission President’s cabinet took an extended period to respond during internal consultations.
Labeling the Commission’s yearlong delay as both “incomprehensible” and unlawful, O’Reilly underscored that this conduct amounted to maladministration.
