UN Envoy Calls for Renewed Political Efforts Amid Rising Yemen Tensions

Hans Grundberg warned that increasing regional tensions could push Yemen into a broader conflict. He urged the Council to support a credible path to a political process and called on regional actors to use their influence to guide Yemenis towards engagement.

Since 2014, Yemeni government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, have been fighting Houthi rebels for control. The government is based in Aden, while the Houthis control Sana’a and large areas in the north and west. Recently, separatist forces in the south have advanced.

Grundberg, speaking from Riyadh, reported positive developments such as improved electricity and public sector salary payments, and the appointment of three women ministers. However, he noted that ongoing tensions and recent security incidents highlight the situation’s fragility.

He told the Council that a new cabinet could protect recent gains through stronger institutions and economic reforms. A planned southern dialogue could address grievances and build consensus on important issues for the region’s people.

Grundberg emphasized that stabilization will not last without addressing the country-wide conflict. He called for decisive steps towards a political settlement, warning that without it, progress remains vulnerable.

The UN envoy is engaging with warring parties, regional actors, and the international community to restart an inclusive political process. Consultations with Yemenis led to three main takeaways: acknowledging the war’s impact, the need for an inclusive political process under UN auspices, and the importance of engagement across political, economic, and security issues.

A credible process should allow near-term agreements to reduce suffering while providing space for negotiations on long-term issues, such as the future state’s shape and governance principles.

Grundberg reiterated the call for the unconditional release of 73 UN personnel detained by the Houthis, along with civil society and diplomatic mission representatives. Many have been held incommunicado, with serious concerns about their wellbeing, and some face trials that lack due process.

He noted a year had passed since a World Food Programme staff member died in custody without investigation.

A UN aid office senior official reported that Houthi authorities entered UN offices in Sana’a without permission, taking equipment and vehicles. They continue to withhold clearances for UN Humanitarian Air Service flights to Marib, although flights to Sana’a resumed recently.

Interference and impediments occur as 22.3 million people in Yemen need humanitarian assistance this year, nearly three million more than in 2025. Around 18 million face food insecurity, making Yemen the region’s most severe hunger crisis, with 5.5 million experiencing emergency food security conditions.

  1. So, let me get this straight: we’re waiting for the UN to work its magic in Yemen while the locals are busy playing a never-ending game of musical chairs with power? Nothing says progress like a new cabinet while the country’s on the brink—bravo, Hans! 🙄

  2. You know, it’s always heartwarming when an envoy suggests we should *really* try politics in a war zone—like throwing a tea party in a hurricane. 🙄 Just a casual reminder that Yemen’s not exactly a walk in the park, mate.

  3. Imagine that, after years of escalating tensions, all we need is a cup of coffee and a good chat to solve Yemen’s woes. 🎉 If only political progress were as easy as getting a decent pint around here! 🍺

  4. Oh, fantastic! Just what we needed, another UN envoy telling us that tensions are rising and everyone should “engage”—because clearly that’s been working wonders, hasn’t it? 🤦‍♂️ #GroundbreakingInsights

Seems like the UN envoy’s got it all figured out—just sprinkle a bit of political fairy dust and voilà, Yemen’s back to paradise, right? 🤔🙄 Maybe he should send an invite to the next tea party in Riyadh; can’t hurt to mix business with a dash of diplomacy!

Seems like Yemen is just the perfect place for a political seminar, what with electricity making a comeback and ministers popping up like mushrooms 🍄. Who knew conflict could be so… productive? 😂

  7. Isn’t it charming how the UN envoy thinks political efforts will magically solve Yemen’s issues? Must be nice to be so optimistic when the rest of us are just trying to make it through our next coffee break without a crisis. ☕️😏

Great to see the UN is still playing “let’s make a deal” in Yemen while the clock ticks! 🤷‍♂️ Maybe they’ll pull a magic rabbit out of the hat this time, or just another round of “talks” in a fancy office. 🥳

Looks like the UN envoy has a new hobby: giving motivational speeches in a warzone! Who knew “political engagement” could be so popular when the stakes are as high as Yemen’s? 😏

  10. Oh sure, let’s just sprinkle a bit of political fairy dust over Yemen while the whole place is on fire, shall we? 🤔💼 With all this “improved electricity” and fancy female ministers, it’s a wonder they don’t just throw a party in the middle of the chaos. 🎉

So, while Yemen’s about to become a new hotspot for “who can ignore the peace talks longest,” we’re all just waiting for the UN to sort out their next diplomatic tea party. 🍵👀

Oh sure, let’s just keep calling for political efforts while the whole place turns into a lovely game of “who can starve the most people” – sounds like a solid plan, innit? 😏

Another day, another call for political efforts in Yemen—because clearly, the last decade of conflict was just a warm-up, right? 😏 Can’t wait to see how this “credible path” unfolds while everyone else is busy playing their own version of Monopoly! 🤑

Seems like the UN is trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube while blindfolded in a tornado. Just what Yemen needs, more “positive developments” to go with the existential crisis. 🤦‍♂️

Brilliant, isn’t it? Nothing like a UN envoy asking nicely for peace while everyone else is busy playing musical chairs with power in Yemen. 🤦‍♂️ Just what we need—more talk and less action.

  17. Oh, fantastic! Just what we needed—a UN envoy calling for political efforts while Yemen’s a ticking bomb. 💣 Let’s hope the regional players take a break from their coffee breaks to actually do something, eh? ☕️

  18. Looks like the UN envoy’s having a lovely time playing political whack-a-mole in Yemen. How delightful to see promising electricity and salary payments while the country’s on the brink of a full-scale party! ⚡💸

  19. Isn’t it charming how the UN keeps calling for “renewed efforts” while Yemen spirals deeper into chaos? Just a little more dialogue and maybe they’ll find the magic formula for peace… or is it just wishful thinking? 🙄💼

Oh great, another UN envoy waving a flag and asking for a “credible political process” in Yemen – because clearly, that’s worked wonders in the past! 🤦‍♂️ Talk about reinventing the wheel while the country’s falling apart!
