“It’s crucial to alleviate congestion at crossing points and reopen vital lifelines like the Jordan corridor,” stated Juliette Touma, Director of Communications at UNOPS, the United Nations Office for Project Services.
In a briefing, Ms. Touma noted that despite the 3 October ceasefire providing some relief, “people continue to be killed daily”.
She emphasized that Gaza’s extremely vulnerable people “cannot wait” for a reconstruction plan championed by the US-led Board of Peace. “They require immediate supplies, not just services,” she asserted.
UNRWA commitment
Reflecting similar concerns, the UN agency for Palestinians, UNRWA, highlighted its essential and long-term role in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including Gaza. This mandate was given to UNRWA by UN Member States at the General Assembly in December 1949.
“We are the largest United Nations agency operating in the Gaza Strip,” stated Jonathan Fowler, UNRWA Senior Communications Manager. “We must continue our work; that’s unequivocal.”
Board of Peace
While details on how the UN will support the Board of Peace, launched by President Trump at Davos, are unclear, last November’s Security Council resolution 2803, which welcomed its creation, emphasized the significance of collaboration with “cooperating organizations” including the United Nations.
“We are strongly committed to ensuring the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 2803,” stated Alessandra Vellucci, Director, UN Information Service, Geneva. “There is a role for the UN in leading humanitarian aid delivery, a role we have long performed and will continue to execute to the best of our abilities.”
Since Sunday, humanitarian partners have provided emergency shelter assistance to over 13,000 households in Gaza, distributing numerous tents and thousands of tarpaulins, according to the aid coordination office, OCHA.
Gaza distribution obstacles remain
The UN office noted that “capacity and funding constraints” have limited support to only about 40 percent of the 970 displacement sites in the Strip.
Healthcare needs remain significant in Gaza, where providers like UNRWA assist approximately 15,000 patients daily, despite numerous challenges.
“We had 22 clinics operating in the Gaza Strip before the war, now we’re down to six,” said Mr. Fowler. “We have mobile health teams working under incredibly challenging conditions.”
Several UNRWA facilities lie behind the so-called Yellow Line – a series of concrete barriers erected by Israeli authorities separating Gazans from the Israel Defense Forces – part of the three-step Gaza peace plan.
“That complicates our work and many locations are heavily damaged or destroyed,” Mr. Fowler continued. “Additionally, we are banned by Israeli authorities from bringing in our supplies.”
UNRWA premises ‘stormed’
Addressing the destruction of UNRWA’s East Jerusalem headquarters on Tuesday, Mr. Fowler described how visiting diplomats were affected when Israeli forces “stormed and demolished” buildings in the compound, using tear gas. “This is a United Nations compound, so this is an attack on the United Nations,” he told journalists.
Training centre threat
Expressing concerns that the UNRWA-supported Kalandia Training Centre could be closed “within days”, Mr. Fowler explained it mainly aided lower-income families in gaining livelihood skills: “If the centre closes, there is no educational alternative for these students.”
The UN agency remains deeply concerned about events in the occupied West Bank, a year after Israeli forces initiated operation Iron Wall.

Imagine needing to wait for a “reconstruction plan” while your roof is literally falling in. Classic UN style, isn’t it? 🏚️💁♂️
-
Oh sure, because what’s a little humanitarian crisis amidst all the boardroom chatter? Reminds me of sorting out a pub tab while the place is on fire. 🍻💼
-
Quite the masterclass in humanitarian juggling, isn’t it? Meanwhile, the folks in Gaza can just sit tight and wait for that reconstruction plan – I mean, who needs immediate aid when you’ve got a Board of Peace sorting things out? 😏
-
Seems like we’ve got a real humanitarian dream team here, navigating the maze of red tape while folks in Gaza are just looking for a way to survive. Who knew “immediate supplies” was a code for “let’s talk about it next year”? 🤷♂️
-
Reconstruction talks? Brilliant idea! Let’s just hold a meeting while the roof’s caving in on the folks below. Classic bureaucratic charm, innit? 🤦♂️
-
Right, so let’s hold a global conference on the “Board of Peace” while the folks in Gaza are still scavenging for supplies—classic! 🤷♂️ You’d think they’d prioritize actual aid over bureaucratic chatter, but hey, who needs common sense when you’ve got a fancy title? 💼
-
Talk about a classic case of “let’s plan for the future while everyone’s drowning” – I suppose those in charge think a fancy brochure will fix broken lives! 🧐💼
-
Typical bureaucratic chatter, isn’t it? Talk about a “Board of Peace” while the folks on the ground are still waiting for a slice of bread! 🍞😏
-
Looks like we’re all in for a riveting game of “let’s talk while the house is on fire.” Maybe we should just start handing out band-aids instead of waiting for the grand reconstruction plan – it’s that or a miracle, right? 😏
-
Typical UN fashion, eh? While the world’s in crisis, let’s have a chat about plans—because who doesn’t love a good brainstorming session when folks are literally waiting for aid? 🤷♂️
-
Seems like the reconstruction talks are just a fancy way to distract us from the urgent needs of the people. Classic politicking, innit? 🤷♂️💼
-
Looks like the UN is all for a peaceful reconstruction while playing a game of ‘let’s see how many people we can help with one hand tied behind our back’ 🙃. I suppose when it comes to humanitarian aid, less is definitely more, right?
-
Blimey, who knew that “massive needs” could be met with just a sprinkle of good intentions and a dash of red tape? 🚧 It’s like fixing a leaking ship with a band-aid while the lifeboats are still in the hold! 🛥️
-
Blimey, it seems the UN’s got its hands full with “massive needs” while juggling reconstruction talks—like trying to fix a leaky tap in a sinking ship, innit? 🛠️💸
-
Just what we need, more talks while the folks in Gaza wait for a miracle—because who doesn’t love a bit of bureaucratic ballet while the house is on fire? 🤦♂️
-
Oh, fantastic! Because nothing says “immediate aid” quite like endless meetings about a reconstruction plan while people are still waiting for basic supplies. 🤦♂️
-
Talk about a masterclass in humanitarian procrastination! It’s like waiting for the next season of a soap opera while the whole cast is stuck in traffic. 🤦♂️
-
Just what we need—more talks while the “massive needs” pile up like last week’s leftover haggis. Bravo, UN, truly a masterclass in procrastination! 🙄
-
Isn’t it charming how the UN keeps reminding us that reconstruction talks are the main event while folks in Gaza are just waiting for their daily survival supplies? Must be nice to have such a clear agenda while the rest of us are just trying to figure out which way is up! 🤷♂️
-
Oh great, just what we need—more reconstruction talks to distract us from the fact that people are still being killed daily. It’s like planning a fancy dinner while the kitchen’s on fire, innit? 🍽️🔥
