Ukraine reports Russian offensive slowing after Musk blocks Starlink access

A Ukrainian General Staff commander described Russian units as having problems and being “like blind kittens.” Russian military bloggers who previously supported Musk criticized the widespread failure of Starlink satellite service terminals on the Ukrainian frontline starting February 4. A Russian pro-war military Telegram channel, Dva Mayora, noted that Russian forces used unauthorized “gray” Starlink terminals for communication, which was easier than other methods, and blamed Musk for aiding Ukraine. In response, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, with SpaceX, began verifying Starlink terminals to protect against Russian drones using the service illegally during attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid. The Ministry highlighted that Russian drones equipped with Starlink are challenging to counter due to their low-altitude flights, electronic warfare resistance, and remote piloting capabilities.
