The United States has its own historical ties to British colonialism, and next year will mark 250 years since the original 13 states declared independence from Great Britain.
According to The Sun, King Charles plans to propose a partial U.S. membership in the Commonwealth during President Trump’s upcoming visit to the palace. The move is aimed at easing tensions between the White House and Canada amid their ongoing trade war and diplomatic disagreements.
Canada, which Trump has expressed interest in welcoming as the 51st U.S. state, is already part of the Commonwealth—though this should not be confused with American states that use the term. The British Commonwealth consists of 56 nations, including the United Kingdom and many of its former colonies.
