The European Newsroom (enr) hosted a delegation of journalists from the United States at its Brussels office as part of a two-week exchange program with the RIAS Berlin Kommission.
The group, representing various media outlets including Semafor, WCVB, NPR, CNN, KTVI/KPLR, WSOC Charlotte, Spectrum News, ABC, The Dispatch, and CBS, hailed from states such as New York, Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., Missouri, Georgia, North Carolina, and Arizona.
During their visit, participants engaged in a dynamic discussion about the current landscape of journalism, news coverage, and press freedom in both the United States and Europe, as well as strategies for sourcing critical information. They explored the similarities and differences between daily press briefings at the White House and the European Commission.
Tim Kohnen outlined the European Newsroom’s role as a network of European news agencies based in Brussels. He was joined by Katharina Redanz and Niklas Treppner from the German press agency dpa Deutsche Presse-Agentur GmbH, who provided deeper insights into reporting on EU matters as correspondents in Brussels.
The RIAS Berlin Commission organizes several exchange programs each year, mainly for radio and television journalists from the US and Germany. Its mission is to foster better German-American relations in broadcast journalism through immersive study visits and newsroom tours.
This particular journey included stops in Munich, Dresden, Berlin, Cologne, and Brussels, with Christoph Jumpelt, RIAS Executive Director, accompanying the journalists.
