Their arrests occurred four months after Istanbul’s mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, was jailed on corruption charges.
İmamoğlu, seen as Erdoğan’s main political rival, faced arrest in March, which sparked widespread protests. Subsequently, he was named his party’s presidential candidate. Turkey’s next presidential election is set for 2028.
Other CHP figures have also been targeted. The former mayor of Izmir and 137 officials were arrested earlier this week over fraud and tender-rigging allegations, according to the Associated Press. State-run media reported that the mayor of Manavgat, also from CHP, was detained with 34 others on corruption charges.
