Brussels – In a letter obtained by AFP, former commissioner Thierry Breton has stated, “I regret to inform you that I will not be able to participate,” addressing Republican lawmaker Jim Jordan, the head of the House Judiciary Committee.
He further noted, “As this hearing pertains to the policies of the European Union, specifically the Digital Services Act (DSA), the European Commission will respond to you directly.”
The DSA aims to safeguard European users against disinformation, online hate, counterfeit products, and dangerous items by imposing certain obligations on platforms, particularly in reporting problematic content.
On Monday, without naming the EU, President Donald Trump criticized countries that regulate the tech industry, threatening them with potential tariffs and export restrictions.
Jim Jordan had previously announced Nigel Farage, leader of the far-right British party Reform UK, as a “confirmed” witness, with Thierry Breton listed as a “guest” witness. (August 28, 2025)
