Sudan: UN Rights Chief Warns of Escalation Without Global Intervention

We can only expect worse to come” unless action is taken to stop the violence, Mr. Türk told Member States at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, renewing his call for the extension of an arms embargo from Darfur to the whole of Sudan.

Rival forces from the national army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia have been fighting for control of the country for nearly three years.

Action is needed to address the “continuous inflow of weapons,” the High Commissioner for Human Rights insisted, after sharing testimonies from survivors of atrocities in El Fasher, North Darfur’s capital, by the paramilitary RSF who took over the city last October.

Mass killings

“In one horrific example, people who fled to separate locations, thousands of kilometers apart, gave consistent accounts of the mass killing of hundreds of people sheltering at El Fasher University,” he said, providing convincing evidence that some victims were targeted based on their non-Arab ethnicity, particularly the Zaghawa ethnic group.

“Survivors also described seeing piles of dead bodies along roads leading away from El Fasher, in an apocalyptic scene that one person likened to the Day of Judgment,” the High Commissioner added, echoing the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) conclusion last month that war crimes and crimes against humanity occurred in El-Fasher, related to the RSF’s siege.

“Our own findings are fully consistent” with that ICC assessment, Mr. Türk reported to the Human Rights Council during a meeting focused on the Sudan crisis.

Dire warnings

Previously, the UN rights chief highlighted that his office warned about past atrocity crimes such as the RSF attack to seize Zamzam camp for displaced people in April 2025.

Responsibility for these atrocity crimes lies squarely with the RSF and their allies and supporters,” he stated.

The war in Sudan began in April 2023, after a power-sharing agreement broke down in the resource-rich central African nation between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF.

The resulting humanitarian emergency has affected over 30 million people in Sudan; many have experienced repeated displacement, while others have been affected by famine and systematic sexual violence, including gang rape.

As the fighting continues from Darfur in the west to the central Kordofan regions, there is fear of further grave abuses, including by “advanced drone weaponry systems used by both sides,” Mr. Türk warned.

Deadly drone war

“In the last two weeks, the SAF and allied Joint Forces broke the sieges on Kadugli and Dilling,” the High Commissioner said. “But drone strikes by both sides persist, causing dozens of civilian deaths and injuries.

Civilians are at risk of summary executions, sexual violence, arbitrary detention, and family separation.”

Mediation measures

In an effort to prevent further bloodshed, the High Commissioner announced a series of measures “to support mediation efforts” and reduce violence.

These include commitments not to target civilians or residential areas with explosive weapons, to allow the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, to end arbitrary detention and stop attacks on civilian infrastructure.

“I saw the damage caused by RSF attacks on Merowe dam and hydroelectric power station, which once provided 70 percent of Sudan’s electricity. Repeated drone strikes have disrupted power and water supplies to large numbers of people, significantly impacting healthcare,” he said.

  1. Seems like Sudan’s in a bit of a pickle, eh? Maybe if the powers that be paid attention to more than their own reflections, they’d realize that a strong arms embargo is just what the doctor ordered—if only we could prescribe common sense! 🤷‍♂️💼

Seems like the UN’s got a real handle on things, eh? Just a casual reminder that if we don’t intervene, Sudan might just throw itself a little apocalypse party. 🎉

  3. Doz Killer Avatar

If only someone could invent a magic wand for the UN to make all these problems disappear, right? But alas, it seems “global intervention” is just a fancy way of saying “let’s keep discussing this over tea while the world burns” 🤷‍♂️.

Looks like Sudan’s having a bit of a tough time, eh? Perhaps they should just send a postcard to the UN and ask them to “sort it out” over tea and crumpets. ☕️✌️

Looks like Sudan’s got more drama than a soap opera, but hey, who needs global intervention when you can just watch the chaos unfold from the comfort of your armchair? 🪑💥

  6. ManBreaker Avatar

Oh, sure, because nothing says “peaceful resolution” like a good ol’ arms embargo, right? 🤦‍♂️ Just what we need, more experts in Geneva with their fancy ideas while the folks on the ground are playing a deadly game of musical chairs with drones!

Isn’t it just delightful how the UN has once again rediscovered the concept of “global intervention”? I suppose they think a polite letter might do the trick this time. 😏✉️

  9. Seal Snake Avatar

Just what we need, more global intervention—because clearly, waiting around for things to get worse has worked wonders so far! 🤦‍♂️ Who knew that a bit of diplomacy could solve what looks like a bad sequel to a B-movie disaster flick?

  10. Mr. Gadget Avatar

Oh sure, because a stern warning from the UN has always been the magic wand for peace—who needs actual intervention when we can just sit back and watch the chaos unfold? 😏

  11. Looks like we need to send a few postcards to Sudan if we want to save the day. Maybe a nice “Wish You Were Here” card would remind everyone that peace isn’t just for the holiday brochures. 😏✈️

Global intervention? Oh sure, because clearly, the solution to a three-year civil war is just a bit of friendly meddling from the outside. 😏

Seems like Sudan’s got a real knack for turning a minor squabble into a full-blown episode of “Survivor: Apocalypse Edition.” 🎬 Who needs a peaceful resolution when you can have drone strikes and humanitarian crises as the main attractions? 🍿

  14. Nothing says “let’s fix a crisis” like a bunch of diplomats in Geneva waving their arms while Sudan’s on fire. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe if we keep sending memos, the drones will start to take requests? 😂

Seems like Sudan really knows how to throw a party—mass killings and drone strikes included! Who needs a peaceful resolution when you’ve got a front-row seat to this never-ending horror show? 🤷‍♂️

Looks like Sudan’s turned into the latest ‘must-watch’ horror show; who needs Netflix when you have mass killings and drone strikes on the menu? 🍿 Guess the UN’s just here to drop dire warnings like they’re handing out free samples at a supermarket, eh?

  17. Seems like Sudan is the new holiday destination for mass mayhem; who needs a peaceful beach when you can have a drone-fueled apocalypse? 😂

Just what we need, another expert telling us we should do something about Sudan—because clearly, sitting on our hands has worked wonders so far. 🤷‍♂️
