Ljubljana – On Thursday, the Slovenian government approved the national plan for executing the European Pact on Migration and Asylum. This new set of regulations, designed to enhance migration management and strengthen the common European asylum system, was endorsed by the European Union in May and is scheduled to be implemented in 2026.
The implementation will be structured around ten key components outlined in the EU’s joint implementation plan, according to the Slovenian Ministry of the Interior following the government meeting.
“In line with the gap analysis provided by the European Commission for each member state, national implementation plans must be submitted by December 12. The analysis conducted at the end of September indicated that Slovenia possesses a robust migration and asylum management system, positioning it well to adapt to the new regulations,” the Ministry stated.
The Slovenian plan details essential measures for each key component, although a legislative framework for the pact’s execution is still pending. A legislative proposal is currently in development, and the legal framework must be finalized by June 2026.
The European Pact on Migration and Asylum was officially adopted by EU member states in May after eight years of negotiations with the European Parliament. This legislation mandates solidarity among member states, introduces more efficient asylum processes, and enhances border management. Slovenia has been a proponent of implementing the pact prior to the scheduled summer 2026 deadline. (December 5)
