Bratislava – Slovakia has assumed the rotating presidency of the Slavkov format (S3) as of Monday, lasting until June 30, 2026. The primary focuses will be energy security, collaboration in European matters, EU enlargement towards the Western Balkans, as well as enhancing transport infrastructure, digital transformation, and development cooperation. This information was provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic.
This marks Slovakia’s fourth presidency, which was officially transferred last week by Juraj Blanár, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs of Slovakia. The Slavkov format includes Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Austria.
“Our priority during the Slovak presidency is to foster cooperation in essential areas of mutual interest, where we share strong motivations to advocate similar positions for the benefit of our citizens. We emphasize enhancing energy security, EU enlargement, improving cross-border transport infrastructure, and upholding international law principles,” stated Blanár.
Slovakia will concentrate on collective efforts in European affairs, while also strengthening development cooperation and digital transformation. The work agenda for the Slavkov format for 2025 – 2026 has been ratified by all three nations.
The Slavkov format seeks to enhance regional collaboration among these Central European countries for the benefit of their citizens, encourage new initiatives in shared interests, and facilitate information exchange. As Blanár noted, this partnership has established a stable foundation for regional cooperation over the past decade.
“Together, we have addressed challenges in Central Europe and provided assistance beyond the borders of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Austria,” emphasized the Slovak Foreign Minister, pointing to the modernization of the rail connection between the capitals – Prague, Bratislava, and Vienna – as a key initiative for improving transport infrastructure. Additional significant steps are being undertaken in development cooperation.
Blanár noted that the three countries have long been actively engaged in the Friends of the Western Balkans grouping, aiming to facilitate the European integration of states in this region. He also highlighted support for sustainable development projects in Georgia and ongoing efforts in environmental management of medical waste in Lebanon.
The Slavkov format was established on January 29, 2015, when the prime ministers of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Austria signed the Slavkov Declaration in Slavkov near Brno. Marking the tenth anniversary of the format’s inception, the first-ever S3 summit at the presidential level took place on March 5, 2025. The presidency rotates annually among member states.
“We emphasize strengthening energy security, the enlargement of the European Union, the development of cross-border transport infrastructure, and adherence to the principles of international law.” Juraj Blanár.
