Bratislava – In a world marked by instability and unpredictable geopolitical shifts, Slovakia and its diplomats are tasked with ensuring international stability while advancing the nation’s interests. President Peter Pellegrini made this statement on Tuesday during the appointment ceremony for new heads of diplomatic missions. He affirmed Slovakia’s strong ties to the European Union (EU) and NATO while underscoring the importance of fostering relationships with other global partners, according to TASR.
During the event, Pellegrini presented credentials to several new ambassadors, including Olga Algayerova, who will head Slovakia’s permanent mission to the Council of Europe (CoE), Martin Muranský, the new ambassador to the Czech Republic, Peter Susko, who will represent Slovakia in the United Kingdom, and Milan Cigáň, who will lead the diplomatic mission in Mexico, advocating for Slovakia’s interests in Mexico and across Central America, including Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.
Pellegrini cautioned that while the EU and NATO remain Slovakia’s primary security and economic frameworks, building relationships with other partners is also essential.
“We must cultivate connections based on mutual respect and sovereign foreign policy in all directions,” he emphasized.
The President expressed confidence in the expertise of the newly appointed diplomats, believing it will aid them in navigating the challenges ahead. He highlighted pressing issues requiring their focus. For the permanent representative to the Council of Europe, he identified the enhancement of human rights protection mechanisms as a key priority. Regarding the new ambassador to the Czech Republic, he acknowledged the evolving Czech-Slovak relations in light of differing views on the Ukraine conflict. He wished success to the ambassador to the United Kingdom in fostering consensus on various issues impacting British-Slovak relations, noting the UK’s significance as a major global player in security and economic matters.
