Nouakchott – EU Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Síkela, has signed a budget support agreement with Mauritania, providing 100 million euros to bolster the country’s stability and development. This agreement, announced by the Czech commissioner during his visit to Mauritania, marks his first official trip since taking office in early December, as shared on his social media channel X.
The funding will be allocated to local development initiatives aimed at generating jobs, enhancing essential infrastructure, and improving public services. According to Síkela, Mauritania has satisfied all necessary criteria for this support, which focuses on national reforms, macroeconomic stability, sound public finances, and transparency.
Síkela highlighted Mauritania as a dependable partner, noting that the collaboration would open up new prospects for European businesses. During his visit, he engaged in discussions with President Muhammad uld Ghazwani, the Prime Minister, and key ministers from the fields of energy, interior, foreign affairs, and economy and finance over the course of Wednesday and Thursday.
As the EU Commissioner responsible for international cooperation and development policy, Síkela plays a crucial role in enhancing coordination between the EU and its member states in the realm of development. He is also a proponent of the Global Gateway investment initiative, designed to position the EU as a competitor to China’s new Silk Road project. This initiative aims to secure investments amounting to 300 billion euros for infrastructure projects in developing regions, particularly in Africa, India, Latin America, and the Pacific over the upcoming years.
