Romanian President Iohannis Exposes Foreign Election Interference
President Klaus Iohannis has disclosed evidence from Romania’s secret intelligence services indicating that state and non-state actors interfered in the recent presidential election, with Russia identified as responsible for a string of aggressive hybrid attacks. The United States has endorsed the findings implicating Russian involvement.
In response to the intelligence, Iohannis took the extraordinary step of declassifying secret files. The documents alleged that Calin Georgescu, the far-right candidate, unlawfully benefited from extensive electoral promotion during campaign blackout periods. Furthermore, they revealed that his campaign had received foreign financial support, despite Georgescu’s claims of spending no money on his candidacy.
The Constitutional Court faced an overwhelming wave of requests to annul the election in light of this newly declassified information. During a televised address on Friday evening, President Iohannis described the situation as a critical national security matter. Referring to the foreign interference, he stressed, “The evidence that this campaign was illegally supported from outside Romania shows we are dealing with a matter of national security.”
What’s at Stake?
This election has come to symbolize a larger ideological clash for many Romanians — a choice between aligning with Western values or pivoting toward Eastern influence. Elena Lasconi, firmly rooted in centrist traditional parties, was seen as representing the pro-West camp, while Georgescu drew support from three far-right organizations, including two recently elected to parliament.
Georgescu’s outspoken positions on NATO and the EU have raised alarms among many, stoking fears that his leadership would weaken Romania’s international alliances and shift the country toward Moscow’s orbit. A vocal admirer of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Georgescu praised him as a leader and patriot. He also pledged to end all Romanian aid to Ukraine — a significant move at a time when Kyiv is grappling with heightened conflict and reliance on international support.
