The European Union’s new foreign affairs chief, Kaja Kallas, joined European Council President António Costa and European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos on a visit to Kyiv this past Sunday. The trip, which coincided with the first day of the new European Commission’s mandate, was aimed at reaffirming the EU’s “unwavering support for the Ukrainian people,” according to Costa, who shared details of the visit on social media platform X.
Meanwhile, Russian lawmakers had already passed their budget plans in late November, approving record-setting defense spending as they press ahead with their war in Ukraine.
As the conflict nears its three-year anniversary, tensions have been mounting. In recent days, Moscow issued threats against government buildings in Kyiv and carried out large-scale aerial attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The Kremlin claims these assaults were a response to Ukraine’s deployment of advanced weaponry supplied by Western allies, including long-range missiles from the United States and the United Kingdom.
The intensifying situation underscores the ongoing strain in the region as Ukraine continues to face relentless assaults from Russia, bolstered by unwavering European and Western support.
