Brussels – The European Commission has announced plans to initiate a “strategic dialogue” regarding the future of the automotive industry in Europe starting in January. This decision comes amidst a wave of crisis reports impacting several major car manufacturers, which has sparked calls for more lenient environmental regulations.
“We have a duty to develop solutions that are both environmentally friendly and competitive,” stated President Ursula von der Leyen in a recent press release.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, speaking prior to the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday, expressed his support for a European initiative aimed at boosting electric vehicles. In his subsequent press conference, he confirmed that discussions concerning the automotive sector will take place at the upcoming EU leaders’ summit scheduled for March 2025 in Brussels.
According to Council President António Costa, the forthcoming meeting will primarily address issues related to competitiveness, trade, and employment.
